Great question! The concept for PANTEE focuses on up-cycling pre-consumer waste t-shirts over other materials/garments for three core reasons. Firstly, studies estimate that within the fashion industry, 30% of garments are never sold. When you consider that over 2-billion t-shirts are sold worldwide each year, the amount of t-shirts that go to waste is astronomical.
Secondly, it takes 2,700 litres of water to make just one t-shirt, so every time a t-shirt goes to waste without ever being used that water is completely wasted. Finally, the composition of t-shirts lends itself to other garments, like underwear. Our products are made out of t-shirts that are around 90% cotton and 10% blend. The result is a super soft and comfortable product that has the stretch to fit and keep its shape. For now, we aren’t using 100% cotton as this can be more easily recycled or is biodegradable. Instead, we are focusing on those made from blend fabrics as they aren’t widely recycled.
We have spent the last few months researching and building relationships with UK based recycling plants and manufacturers. Moving forward, we will be working with them to save t-shirts that would otherwise go to landfill. We are always on the lookout for new partnerships and suppliers, so if you hear of any t-shirts going to waste we are all ears!
Studies estimate that 30% of garments produced are never sold – it’s not just t-shirts. There is a number of reasons why stock goes unsold. It may be because the product isn’t quite perfect, it didn’t sell as well as the brand thought it would, or maybe even a last-minute change in heart over design.
Even though a lot of this stock goes to waste, it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the materials used. This waste doesn’t have to be wasted.
All PANTEE sets are made to order in the UK by independent seamstresses, so you can be sure that your set was made by someone who truly knows their stuff. Much like us, t-shirts come in all shapes and sizes. We work very collaboratively with our designers and makers to ensure each collection is as perfect and unique as the last. Everyone who works with us is a valued member of the team, their pay, conditions and happiness reflect this.
